Utopia

While trolling some game sites, I read some gamer bragging and singing the praises of fiber connection via Utopia. He claimed in his little spiel that Utopia gave him 15 mips up n down and that it was ... *drumroll*... community provided !! Intrigued I looked them up...

Indeed, Utopia is a community based telecommunications provider. Several cities in Utah, found that dealing with private (monopoly) providers was wholly unsatisfactory and downright anti-competitive. So, they formed their own project. Unlike Peoria, Utopia was focused on providing wired communications at the wholesale level. Utopia was going to wire a string of cities along the Salt Lake. They were not just simply going to provide the 'service', they were going to lay down the hardware too. What is also unique someone else would provide the customer service over the Utopia network. Utopia is building the 'roads', managing the 'roads', it is up to others to provide the transportation. Utopia is making the physical network, a piece of public infrastructure.

Go to the website, they lay out their case for why they are doing what they are doing.

Utopia

$44 a month for 15 Mps up n down !!! Wowza! SBC/Insight are the SUCK !
